I can say without hesitation that my introduction to Newton Golf shafts changed the way I look at equipment — and it all started with two people: Angelo Papadourakis and Aki Yorihiro.

I first heard about Newton from Angelo. If you’ve ever talked golf with him, you know he doesn’t just explain technology — he brings it to life. The way he broke down Newton’s design philosophy, especially the Elongated Bend Profile, made me realize this wasn’t just another shaft company trying to stand out. Angelo talked about the shaft’s ability to load and unload more efficiently, creating a smoother, more predictable release. Hearing that directly from someone who understands the product inside and out made a real impact on me.

Then I was part of an interview with Aki, and that’s when everything clicked. Aki has this calm, technical clarity that makes complex engineering feel simple. He explained Newton’s decision to move away from traditional flex labels and replace them with a dot‑based system that actually reflects how golfers swing. It wasn’t just innovation for the sake of innovation — it was a smarter, more intuitive way to fit golfers.

Between Angelo’s passion and Aki’s precision, I felt like I’d been given a behind‑the‑scenes look at a company that was genuinely rethinking what a golf shaft could be. Who knows maybe oneday I will get that behind the scenes look.

Once they put Newton on my radar, I started digging deeper. That’s when I learned Newton had become the No. 1 selling shaft for drivers and fairway woods at Club Champion in 2025 — a huge statement, considering how many shafts pass through their fitting bays. Fitters trust what performs, and clearly Newton was delivering.

When I finally got my hands on a Newton shaft, the difference was immediate. The feel was smoother, the load was more natural, and the ball flight tightened up in a way I didn’t have to force. It felt like the shaft was working with my swing instead of asking me to adjust to it.

And if you want to understand exactly why Newton performs the way it does, you can watch our most recent interview with Aki Yorihiro, Founder & Chief Technology Officer at Newton Golf. Hearing him explain the technology in his own words gives you a whole new appreciation for what these shafts are built to do.

Looking back, I’m grateful for that first conversation with Angelo and the technical insight Aki added. Without them, I might have missed out on one of the most innovative shafts I’ve ever played. Instead, I found a piece of equipment that genuinely elevated my game — and it all started with two voices I trusted.

Lesson to our conversation with Aki Yorihiro…
