When Inspiration Inspires Innovation

At the recent PGA Show 2025 in Orlando, while walking through the aisles of new products, one product stood out. A Red, White, and Blue Eagle, which turned out to be a unique tee holder for a golf bag.
We discussed the new product with Vanessa Vanderzalm, a genuinely enthusiastic entrepreneur.
Vanessa established VannyVee Sports. When discussing her “Animal Caddy Tee Holders” for the PGA Show, I inquired about the origin of the idea.
“I appreciate quirky golf gear, especially animal headcovers popular with casual and pro players,” Vanessa said. “Inspired by Daphne’s Head Covers and Jane’s story of starting the business 45 years ago with her ‘mum,’ I wanted to be like Jane.”
I asked the obvious follow up question – have you ever met Jane Spicer? “No!” Vanessa quickly replied, “I have been a fan of Daphne’s head covers for years, but I’ve never reached out to her.” Picking up the Gator Tee Holder…. Vanessa continued “This was the first one that got created and it was inspired by Daphne’s Gator head cover, which I had on my bag for years.”
As fate would have it… I had just stopped by the Daphne’s Head Covers booth and set with Jane our annual video for my podcast and 3:30 the next day.
I thought to myself… “Why Not!”
I just knew that Jane would be okay with this… so, I invited Vanessa to join us at the Daphne’s booth to be a part of the 2025 podcast recording.
As soon as Jane heard the story behind Vanessa’s inspiration and innovation, she was all in.
The connection was immediate. Jane shared her journey and challenges in building her brand, giving Vanessa valuable advice and encouragement. She concluded with, “Call me if you need any advice or want to bounce ideas off me. I’m here to help!”
Jane’s comment, “We need more women in the golf industry, and we all need to stick together,” really hit home with me and the friendship that was formed between these two ladies, will last a lifetime.
The legacy of creativity and innovation in the golfing world will persist, driven by the inspiration and connections fostered at events such as the PGA Show. Jane and Vanessa exemplify how passion and perseverance can transform aspirations into achievements.
